7-year-old Heba from Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip, was a very active and energetic child. She liked children’s songs, particularly the ones that were played on the local children’s TV channel, Toyor Al Janah. She liked animals and was very concerned about their wellbeing even during the war. Her ambition was to be a teacher. “She liked to take care of her appearance and her clothes,” said her grandmother.
On 1 August 2014, there was violent shelling in Rafah. The Al Mahmoum family decided to evacuate their home. Subsequently, civilian groups were hit by Israeli shells while they were trying to find shelter within UNRWA schools. Many civilians died, Heba and her family were among the dead.
