Hussein Yousef Hassan Kaware’e

11-year-old Hussein Yousef Hassan Kaware’e from Khan Younis was a big football fan. He especially liked the player Messi from Barcelona. “He used to wear his Barcelona football club shirt all the time and he hoped to be a professional player when he grew up,” said his mother.

On 7 August 2014, Hussein, along with other children, went to Mahdi Kwaree’s house to act as human shields in an attempt to prevent Israeli forces from targeting the home. The Israeli forces targeted the house. Seven children were killed including Hussein. When they couldn’t find him, his father went to the European Hospital to see if he’d been taken there. He’d been so badly injured in the attack that his father was only able to identify him from his hair and the clothes that he’d been wearing.
