Location Khan Younis
15-year-old Omar Shaker Barbakh from Khan Younis was a caring and compassionate boy, especially with the younger children in his family who he adored and was always buying candy for. He was said to be quite serious and content, rarely complaining about anything. He liked looking after animals, growing things and singing, especially national songs about freedom. “He hoped to go to university and continue his studies. He was looking forward to getting a driving license,” said his mother.
On 1 August 2014, while Omar was on his way to the mosque to perform the Al Maghreb prayer, the street was hit by a blast from a drone. Omar sustained many shrapnel wounds in the attack. He died six days later from his injuries.
