Seven-year-old Anas Hatem Sulaiman Qdeih from Khuza’a, Khan Younis, was described as a compassionate little boy. Everyone called him by the nickname ‘Bader’. "His grandfather called him Bader because he was very smart and he had a cute face like clear moonlight,” said his mom. Bader was very organized with his time: he loved playing football with his friends, reading his children’s books and flying kites. “He wanted to fly them during the war, but I said not to do so until the war ends," his mother added.
“Bader was so friendly with everyone; with his relatives, friends and siblings. He was so clever too and good at school. Bader was so close to me, we were more than a father and son,” said Bader’s father.
On 24 July 2014, Israeli forces started intensely shelling the area where Anas lived. The residents of the neighborhood started to flee. Anas was seriously wounded. The paramedics couldn’t reach him for many hours as the Israeli forces announced that the area was a closed military zone. When an ambulance did manage to reach him he was still alive. The ambulance was then held up and delayed at an Israeli checkpoint by the soldiers. Anas remained alive until his stretcher was loaded back into the ambulance when the ambulance was just a few minutes away from the hospital.
